Ocado is to create a department dedicated to ‘internet of things’ technology.
Importance of internet of things
The new internet of things (IoT) department will specialise in connecting physical objects to the internet, to improve efficiency across all areas of the business. IoT has previously been a sub-division of the wireless department. IoT technology has always been important to Ocado’s business. For example, in the past, Ocado used the technology to develop robots to collect and process customers’ orders in the warehouse.
Rather than creating IoT technology for customers, such as Amazon have with their Dash Buttons, Ocado has said the team will primarily focus on internal solutions. Ocado has always produced high warehouse efficiency rates, largely driven by technology investment. Pickers have already reached rates of 600+ items per hour. New CFCs at Andover and Erith, set to be operational in 2017 and 2018, as well as increased capacity at existing fulfillment centres, aim to increase rates.
Ocado recently agreed to expand Morrisons’ capacity for online in a new deal, with its technological expertise a key selling point for Morrisons. The online specialist will develop a nationwide store picking solution for Morrisons. Click here to read the full story.
