Microsoft acquires Solair to help drive its Internet of Things strategy

Solair expected to enhance Microsoft’s IoT offering for the enterprise

Microsoft is continuing to ramp up its activity in the Internet of Things (IoT) arena with the acquisition of an Italian firm specialising in IoT services across a number of industries, a move that will complement the software giant’s existing tools and capabilities in this growing sector.

Solair has been operating in what is now known as the IoT market for about five years, helping customers in sectors such as manufacturing, retail, food & beverage and transportation to connect up devices and gain value from data collected from them. Financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Announcing the acquisition on Microsoft’s Official blog, Sam George, partner director for Azure IoT, said that Solair shares Microsoft’s ambition for helping customers harness their untapped data and create new intelligence with IoT.

“This acquisition supports our strategy to deliver the most complete IoT offering for enterprises. We’re excited about their technology and talent – and delighted to welcome them to the Microsoft team,” he said.

Solair’s current IoT customisation and deployment solutions are built on top of Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, and so it will be easy for the software giant to integrate Solair’s technology with its own Azure IoT Suite, launched last year.

Azure IoT Suite packages together multiple Azure services with custom extensions as preconfigured solutions for specific use cases, based on the core Azure IoT Hub, a service for connecting and managing devices as well as linking them to other services such as Azure Stream Analytics and Azure Storage.

Tom Davis, Solair chief executive, said that the acquisition by Microsoft would enable his firm to bring the power of IoT to new and unique customer scenarios.

“From the very start, our mission has been to help customers quickly and easily gain access to the huge benefits of the Internet of Things. By building our solutions based on real customer requirements that allow them to gain real value, I’m confident that Solair’s technology and talent will be able to make an important contribution to Microsoft’s Azure IoT Suite and Microsoft’s broader IoT ambitions,” he said.
