Amazon’s New Store

Amazon’s New Store- Amazon is now selling books at yet another Amazon-branded bricks-and-mortar location.

On Thursday, the company opened its first Amazon 4-Star store, which sells only products that are rated four stars and above on Amazon.com. The shop, in Lower Manhattan, features a wide variety of objects, including highly rated books.

The concept is interesting, but it’s not exactly new. The idea of giving space to things that are selling well and that people are yearning for is what Walmart and Macy’s and, frankly, Barnes & Noble, have been doing for a while. But there’s an Amazon spin: customer reviews next to products, discounts for Prime members, a table featuring products that show up on a lot of Amazon users’ wish lists–all features prevalent at Amazon Books locations that Amazon seems keen to bring to physical retail at large.

Walmart and Barnes & Noble are, of course, Amazon’s direct competitors. Walmart and Amazon seem to be in a distribution and discounting race (and, notably, Walmart just got into the audiobook and e-book business, which Amazon is inarguably a pro at), while Barnes & Noble is poised to be Amazon’s next kill, following the lead of Borders. B&N has long struggled with its product mix, at points giving more space to games and gifts than books (founder and chairman Leonard Riggio recently told Publishers Weekly “that comparable store sales continue to rise for toys and games and a remade gifts section, and that he expects to see better results from B&N’s cafés”), so Amazon 4-Star’s eclectic mix of highly rated merchandise, while on its surface different from what we think of when we thing of bookstores, is still a threat to the struggling chain.
